CAPERS Academy prospect Iven Gouthro is back in training at the CBU Dome after sparkling in the big Sigma FC Showcase with the Halifax Wanderers Development Team before Christmas.
The 16-year-old Glace Bay High School talent, who is bidding to make the 18-man Team Nova Scotia squad for the Canada Games in Newfoundland in August this year, caught fire in Game Two of the prestigious event in Toronto.
Wanderers had lost a tight opener 2-0 to hosts Sigma but bounced back in a 3-0 win over powerhouse Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) franchise Woodbridge Strikers.
Cape Breton’s own Gouthro was the beating heart of that triumph as his powerful shot was saved to create the opener on a rebound before he pounced twice to scorch away from trailing defenders and score two excellent counter-attacking goals.
Iven said: “It was great for us to test ourselves against that sort of opposition and I managed another assist in our 6-4 loss in the closing game against Vaughan.
“I felt I did well in the showcase but my coaches both with Team NS and here in the CBFC Academy look at my game film and point out the areas I can improve on.
“That’s my target over the next few months before the final squad is announced, to keep listening and learning and improving in every practice I am in.”
