CAPE BRETON FC's U13AA Girls ended an unbeaten campaign with a 3-2 win over an excellent Valley United side in the Soccer Nova Scotia Provincial Final at Ness Timmons Field on Sunday.
CAPERS started at an electric pace and were 2-0 up within the first four minutes as Team Nova Scotia players Norah MacDonald and Ella Mills combined for two quickfire goals. Norah's cross for the opener found goal-poacher Mills to score from close range.
Then a pinpoint corner from MacDonald again sought out the striker and Ella headed home her 19th goal of a season that saw her win the accolade as the league's top scorer.
That start would have deflated lesser sides but a brave Valley team fought back tenaciously and had the game tied at 2-2 before the Final had even ticked through 15 minutes on the clock.
It was a nerve-shredding game after that with Capers having to balance seeking the winner against the constant threat of counter attacks but they found the key chance in the 52nd minute when Avery Kelloway pounced at the back point to stab home the winner.
After an unbeaten league season when they had 13 wins and one tie in their 14 regular season games the CAPERS had to battle to get this title over the line but they beat big rivals Suburban 3-1 on Saturday before edging this one.
Their final stats on an invincible season were:
Played 16, Won 15, Lost 0, Tied 1. Goals for 61 Goals Against 4.
Against that backdrop they were deserved champions, a special season for a special group of players and their coaches Tyler Kaupp, Krista Mills and Ashlyn Tierney.
