CAPE BRETON FC's U13 Boys Team Nova Scotia Atlantic Championship Gold Medal winners Luka Church and Matthew Cormier enjoyed a special moment during Saturday night's 3-1 AUS win over Mount Allison at Ness Timmons Field.
At half-time of an exciting match the two outstanding young players from the island were honoured in front of a big crowd as Deano Morley's side got back to winning ways in a campaign that sees the Canadian champions still undefeated after their opening five games of the new season.
As the fans drew their breath after an exciting first-half that saw CAPERS two up, Luka and Matthew had their medal picture taken with CAPERS midfielder Jacob Spizzirri whose golden goal in the 1-0 Final win over Montreal Carabins on home turf last November sealed the program's second National title win in their history.
Regional Director of Soccer Development Iain King hailed the growing potential of midfielder Luka and centre-back Matthew who have now both also earned invites to the Regional Excellence (REX) program with Soccer Nova Scotia over this winter.
Iain said: "At Soccer Cape Breton and CBFC we are extremely proud of the development journey of these players who are both originally alumni of Whitney Pier Soccer Club. We wanted to mark their achievement by having their medals presented again by our own CAPERS National title winning goal hero Jacob.
"These boys dream of wearing the CAPERS jersey that Spizz represents so well and we salute the latest steps in their progress, they have earned it with their dedication to their craft in extra sessions and in their club and Provincial training.
"Both Luka and Matthew played up in age this season on occasion for our U15AA Provincial title winning boys and the coaching staff were blown away not only by how they excelled but by the maturity and calmness they showed facing a different challenge.
"They move up to U15 next summer and it is our job to continue to throw different questions at them and one day I hope turn them into players Deano will be desperate to see wear CAPER orange."
